Biting Off More Than You Can Chew

When mapping out your route and planning the activities and camp sites to hit along the way, a lot of solo travelers make the mistake of being too ambitious in their master plan. Maybe you have planned a route with too many miles between destinations. Perhaps you have added a few too many detours for sites along the way or have been bit too ambitious in your activities planning. This can lead to road fatigue, over packing, and loss of directions along the way.

Navigation Mistakes

When you don’t have travel companions, you are the lone navigator. Although this can be a good thing since you won’t have to deal with differing opinions, it can also be quite a burden. Since you will already be driving, it may be hard to focus on navigation as well as keeping your eyes on the road. Of course you will already have your route mapped out, but you won’t be able to account for aspects such as roadwork, weather, and other challenges that can put you off course. With the advent of GPS, you can keep on top of your navigation duties while on a solo mission. When traveling alone, a GPS system is an absolute must.

Packing Mistakes

Nothing will complicate your trip more than missing items. Maybe you forgot to pack your hiking boots and now have to miss out on the trails or purchase a new pair. Maybe you neglected to pack a fire starting kit and have to tough out a cold night before you can score a new one along the way. Whatever the case, failing to pack certain items can make for a real hassle on the road and cost you time, money, and complications. Before pulling out, make a detailed list of all the items you need, then check that list before you start.

Lack of Safety Equipment

Since you will be journeying alone, you will not have the immediate backup that group travelers benefit from in case of an emergency. This is why you need to make sure to have the proper safety equipment on hand. Bring a first aid kit that has all of the essentials. If you are going to be in a certain area that has its own set of hazards, prepare for this as well. For example, if you will be in the desert then make sure you have a snake bite kit with you.

Spare Parts And Tools

There is nothing worse than getting stranded on the road without the proper tools to fix your stalled or broken down motorhome. Make sure to bring tire changing equipment and some simple tools to fix any uncomplicated engine troubles. You will definitely thank yourself for this should you experience a breakdown.

As long as you don’t make these common mistakes, chances are your solo journey will go just as smoothly as you hope.
