Travel & Experiences

If you're planning on moving overseas, there is a lot you need to organise first. Moving overseas is a big deal and you can't afford to be unprepared if you want everything to run smoothly and seamlessly. This guide will give you a better understanding of what you need to do if you plan on moving overseas.

Start planning

Before you book anything for your overseas journey you need to make a list of everything that you need to do first. This will allow you to stay on top of all your tasks and work out exactly what needs to be done and when it needs to be done by. You can also start planning a budget at this point so you know what you need to save for your journey.

Overseas trips are expensive, so you will need to ensure you allow enough money for flights, accommodation, food, visa fees, and anything else that might come up. It is also a good idea to consider getting health insurance while you're away, as you don't want to be stuck in a country where you won't be covered by their public system.

Get a removalist

You need to find a removalist early on in the planning process so you can ensure they are professional and can provide you with the highest quality of service. Before you sign a contract though you'll need to find out how the removalists intend to move your belongings overseas and how much it will cost to move all your goods.

It's also a good idea to check if they provide any additional services that will make your move easier. Some international removalists will offer to pack and unpack your belongings, or will provide moving insurance, or may be able to transport your pets and vehicles for you. Look at all your options before you make a final decision.

Visas and passports

Before you fly off to your new home you'll need to find out what entry requirements the country has. Some countries will require you to have a visa if you plan on working, which you will need to apply for beforehand. Visas will often come with fees as well, so you'll need to account for this in your budget.

You will also need to ensure that your passport is up-to-date, as you won't be able to travel if it is about to expire. Give yourself enough time for it to arrive, and make sure you apply for a new one before the other one expires. This will save you money and time when applying for another one.

Travel and accommodation

To make sure you're able to get to your new home safely and quickly, you'll need to make travel and accommodation arrangements for your journey. If you can get a flight straight there it will make the journey easier, but sometimes this isn't possible. Make sure you book your flights as early as possible to get the best deals and the best seats.

If you need accommodation during your trip you'll need to arrange this as well so that you won't be left stranded when you arrive. There are great options available for short-term, long-term, and temporary accommodation these days, so no matter what you need you should be able to find something.
